TABLETOPS & more...

Christmas is put away and you want a new look?  Now is the time to "rearrange".  Clear off your tabletops, and place all accessories in a central space which becomes your "shopping" area.  Follow some good "design basics" and the process begins as you start relocating some of your favorite accessories.  Viola, a new look!

A simple design lesson:  Use the DESIGN ELEMENTS of color, shape, texture, line and value as your ingredients and then follow the directions of the DESIGN PRINCIPLES of proportion, balance, rhythm, emphasis and harmony.

PROPORTION-the relationship of one item to another

BALANCE-
Symmetrical-equal weight on each side of the center, a formal look
Asymmetrical-unequal weight on each side of the center, more interesting and less formal

RYTHM- repetition and progression

EMPHASIS-point of interest

HARMONY-putting things together to create unity

While looking at these tabletops,  begin looking at the DESIGN ELEMENTS (color, shape, texture, line and value) and how they are applied according to the DESIGN PRINCIPLES (proportion, balance, rhythm, emphasis and harmony).
ASSYMMETRICAL BALANCE-each side is different but is equal in weight.
The lidded vases on the left show REPETITION of  SHAPE and PROGRESSION  in size.
Notice how the circular shape is repeated.
SYMMETRICAL BALANCE found in a showroom display at Sowell's.
Items equally placed on each side of center create a formal look.
Wall and tabletop accessories working very well together.

Good collection of wall art and tabletop.
All placed together in HARMONY to become one look.
The tree wall hanging is obviously the point of interest (EMPHASIS)
with the tabletop pieces repeating the theme with textures and additional trees.

REPETITION of COLOR  and TEXTURE

Interesting REPETITION of the COLOR green.
Great selection of a tall lamp and a heavy pottery bowl for a BALANCED look on a big wall.
A heavy table and a large art piece all proportionally combined to make a BIG statement.
REPETITION of SHAPE & COLORS.
This small tabletop grouping joins the art piece for a finished look.
Good combination of COLORS, SHAPES and TEXTURES.

All of these design examples are things SOWELL'S designer, Nancy, has created.  Enjoy looking back through the photos and begin identifying the use of DESIGN ELEMENTS with the DESIGN PRINCIPLES in each of the settings.

Probably the best advice to be offered in tabletop decorating is to slightly "overlap" the placement of the accessories.  When you do not have a big statement piece,  overlap your smaller accessories so to expand your look!

SOWELL'S would love to have you share photos of  some of your tabletops designs.

Let The Process Begin...

Have an empty room?
Where do you begin?
Hopefully at Sowell's!

Take a walk through Sowell's showroom and start looking for things you really like.  The designers at Sowell's are there to encourage you and to help you put those items together in such a way that you are suddenly seeing YOUR room!

As you watch your room be completed, your shopping list begins!

The rug in this vignette was the first thing our customer chose
...thus the process began.
Cushions from a sofa and chairs were added along with some accessories to help
visualize the potential of this new room.
After the new items were in place, Nancy "enjoyed shopping"
from the homeowners existing accessories thus blending the old with the new!

FINISHED ROOM by Nancy, Sowell's Designer
The rug became the "connector" and all the fabrics, art and accessories followed it's lead!

Hopefully when you are ready to begin "your process",
you begin at Sowell's Furniture in Downtown Searcy.

From HERE to THERE...

Sowell's is wanting to see some of YOUR designs.   Hopefully this post, "From HERE to THERE", will become a regular post for our customers to share their designs.  If you have a favorite item or items from Sowell's (From HERE) and have found a perfect place in your home (to THERE), we want to feature it!

This first  "From HERE to THERE" post is featuring photos from one of our very good customers who enjoys furniture shopping at Sowell's and interior designing in her home! The new purchases were the red chest, the buttermilk colored bed and dresser.  All accessories and fabric pieces in the room were existing items.

Against a golden colored wall and
between red and gold window treatments, this
great red chest found a new home.

The tables flanking the bed offer
an interesting variety of color and style to the room.

The new buttermilk colored bed is by Paul Deen
and is available at Sowell's.
The new bed and matching dresser assist the existing
bed covering and window treatments to take on a new look!
Note the sutble addition of green in the room
with the bed pillow and area rug.

Great placement of the small flatscreen on the corner of the dresser and mirror!
The green metal chest offers a repetition of color on that side of the room.
Thank You, to the homeowner for sharing her room and her talent!

Now, to our readers, ENJOY!
AND be thinking about your favorite Sowell's item and
how you placed it among some of your favorite things in your home.
It is with great anticipation that we will
share YOUR finished design project.

Email your photos to Sowells, attention Nancy at:
